In the final interview in the series, Carl Gillead, Chief Executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters speaks about what can be an effective option - working with a recruiter to help you find that first post university position. As with so much in life, there are things the graduate can do to make that relationship successful or not.

0:00 Why might working with a recruitment agency be a good idea? They have many more companies in their databases than you do…and know where the jobs are. They’re motivated to help you find the right fit.

2:35 There are 3 key questions you must answer for a recruiter to be able to help you:

  • What do I want to do?
  • Where do I want to work?
  • What do I have to offer to an employer?

Get advice from your university, your family and friends, but also from your recruitment company. It might seem obvious, but don’t wait until the last few weeks of your education to address the issue.

6:15 You want the recruiter to be excited about you. How can you get the recruiter excited about representing you and sending you out on interviews? Do your research and be enthusiastic.

8:10 Every recruiter is looking for someone with “oomph”, the energy, confidence and determination that makes you stand out from the crowd.
