Best Workplace Factors

Giving Something Back

Arup take their responsibility very seriously and have a specific site ‘OvaGreen’ which oversees and keeps them on the ‘straight and narrow’ regarding their recycling ventures. They recycle almost everything they use, including electrical equipment, all types of paper and cartridges. They also support their local community in various ways. For example, they have an outreach/schools engagement activity. Within this they support a wide range of events and work with a number of organisations, all with the aim to promote the industry/profession to young people. They have an internal 'Schools and Youth Outreach' internet forum to share information about these activities and for volunteers to discuss ideas and information with each other. This forum is a great tool for advertising upcoming events and getting volunteers to take part. They also donate to charity and give employees £100 per person, per activity, or £3000 per team where the charity is one of those supported directly by the firm. They do match employee charity contributions; however, there are occasions when this is subject to restrictions. Charities they have supported include Barnardos, British Red Cross and Soft Power Education.

Personal Growth

The Arup approach to personal development is distinctive for its individual and holistic character. Work in Arup is project based. Tasks and responsibilities are allocated in line with the talents and aspiration of each individual. This allows each person’s role to develop around their strengths and over time, allows them to grow both personally and professionally. As part of the annual appraisal with a senior member of the Firm each individual identifies a development plan tailored to their specific situation. The plan addresses both short performance improvement needs and longer term preparation for future challenges and opportunities. Actions identified may include many forms of training; for example, in-house training courses, external courses and e-learning. The individual’s development plan is reviewed and adapted to allow the individual to take advantage of development opportunities as they arise. There are numerous opportunities for knowledge sharing in Arup. These are face to face via lunch and learn sessions and presentations and web sharing technology on a variety of specialist and general subjects. Their main vehicle for knowledge sharing is through a social network for a variety of specialist areas called Skills Networks.
